Save 50 BUCKS! Quick, Easy Fix for Dell Inspiron 15

Dell Inspiron Quick Fix
keyboard Dell Inspiron 15

What the Dell???

One of our customers spilled diet soda on her Dell Inspiron 15.  The computer guy wanted $75!  However, as you probably already know, the heroes at USADIYGUYS were not going to let that injustice stand.

Take a look at how we repaired this quickly and easily here:

Why DIY?

This keyboard is readily available on sites like  Amazon and for a terrific price of $15.  This fix takes minutes and really no prior experience or special skills whatsoever.  Laptops have become much more modular over time, with manufacturers offering many more options for customer replaceable parts.  Indeed, as competition in the marketplace intensifies, even as tablets such as Apple’s iPad (Apple) consume market share once dominated by laptops, manufacturers will strive to make their products more customer friendly.

Enter the case of the Dell Inspiron 15, a value based but reliable computer targeting the ever growing ranks of part time home-based workers and side-hustlers. This computer sells at Best Buy for under $500, but promises functionality and reliability of a laptop nearly twice that. In addition, the manufacturer made this laptop easy to repair and maintain. As you will see from the video, this fix is fast, easy and almost impervious to failure.  Furthermore, once you add in the fact that this costs about $15, and is easy to complete even while binge watching Stranger Things, there really is no downside.

Of course, if you encounter any challenges, or if the damage does not appear to be isolated to the keyboard, then seek professional help.  We are in no way vilifying the paid professionals that repair computers as their bread and butter…we are just trying to help our followers save a few bucks if they are able.

This fix is simple.  Gently remove keyboard cover.  Remove keyboard.  Gently remove ribbon cable and replace with new keyboard, done!

In conclusion, this as a DIY project is a slam dunk.  Especially, We hope you enjoyed the video and post.  If so, subscribe!

Awesome Automation Product

HomeBrite Smart LED Bulb by FEIT Electric

This innovative product is a fraction of the price of other products and performs just as well if not better.

Click Here To View on Amazon

We don’t usually do product reviews but this innovative automation bulb blew us away!

Our attention was immediately drawn to the price: A fully automated LED light for under 13 bucks!  It sounded too good to be true, and after a closer look, it almost is.

The “catch” is that the automation is not managed by WiFi, but by a Bluetooth enabled smartphone.  Although this could be construed as a detriment by some, we actually found it quite convenient.

Read More Below!

The bulb that we tested was a “standard” A19 base light bulb, but it does come in other configurations. This is a standard A19 base light bulb that appears at first glance to resemble an incandescent bulb. The design is unobtrusive and would blend into any fixture that accepts an A19 base. It puts out 800 lumens and is advertised as a 60W replacement, using only 9W. We tested it in an indoor ceiling fixture and an outdoor porch fixture without issue (see photos).

When installed in a light socket the bulb will function as normal: it will turn on and off with a switch. Initially the bulb will flash once to indicate that it is ready to pair. The Application for controlling the bulb, is downloaded for FREE from the Apple App Store or from Google Play. The app can also control multiple bulbs.

The menu of the app is very intuitive.

The app provides a list of all of the light bulbs and allows for on/off or dimming.

The app also allows for customized scheduling fordefinite or indefinite periods.

Total setup for two light bulbs out of the box for a week-long schedule with multiple intervals was approximately 10 minutes.
While some might hold the opinion that Bluetooth admin vs. WiFi is a weakness, we feel that it offers several strengths:

  1. No Network/Router Needed. It operates entirely with a phone. This means less concern about outages, and better security.
  2. Ease of install. Because there is no network configuration, it just installs and goes.
  3. Customization. Because each bulb houses it’s own control, even bulbs on the same circuit or even switch may independently dim or turn on/off.

As mentioned earlier, this product really impressed us with its value. If any other DIYers out there find an automated light controller out there with similar value, please let us know.
Check out the product below.

Upgrade 2012 MacBook Pro With SSD, 2nd HD and 16 GB Ram

The 2012 Apple MacBook Pro is still a great selling product. Why is a 5 year old laptop still doing well?  SCALEABILITY!  MacBooks are no question very well made, but the differentiator here is the end user ability to DIY an upgrade.

The 2012 MacBook, unlike its newer relatives, has no onboard RAM, nor is the flash memory integrated into the motherboard.  While those newer technologies have their benefits, they do certainly limited the upgrade path of the machine.  Those of us on a budget would be limited to 8GB of RAM and a 128 GB hard drive.

The very MacBook (2012) that I am typing this on was sourced nearly for free. The previous owner felt it was obsolete. A few DIY tweaks and this machine runs unbelievably fast.

First, I upgraded the RAM. Moving to 16GB took just a few minutes and was quite economical. ($108 for two).

After installing the RAM, I added a 240 GB Solid State Drive and installed macOS Sierra. This made startup lightning fast. ($75).

Next, I removed the optical drive, and used a hard drive caddy to install a 1gb HDD to make up for storage. This hard drive caddy was an unbelievably easy upgrade and added huge amounts of storage to my Mac.
For under two hundred bucks I have an Apple MacBook that arguably performs, for most tasks, comparably to a brand new MacBook Air.

There are many used 2012 MacBooks still being sold on the market and they are a great bargain for Tech-Savvy DIYers.  These MacBooks have the added benefit of being loaded with ports, items that Apple appears to be pairing down from its newer models.

I have some video and photos of the upgrade process, and I am happy to share them!

Why DIY?

DIY enthusiasm has ebbed and flowed through the years and its popularity is usually reflected in pop-culture.  “Home Improvement”, a TV show starring actor Tim Allen, flourished through the 1990’s.  Subsequently, the establishment and growth of “big-box” retailers paralleled the enthusiasm and demand for building products.  The fervor for DIY seemed to wane in the last 8-10 years, but change is in the air.  Millennials, whom are often criticized for many things including their so-called desire for participation trophies and their perceived lack of social skills, are fueling a new trend in do-it-yourself projects.  This is true of the generation that is close behind, so-called Generation Z.

Google launched in 1998, when even the oldest Millennial was in their 20’s…Generation Z was not even born yet and Facebook hit the scene just six years later.  The absence of WiFi in a public place is now an anomaly.  These groups have been immersed in an ocean of information and would likely need to check Wikipedia to understand an encyclopedia.  Information, ANY information has always been at their fingertips.  How to change a tire? Youtube.  Just made your breakfast? Instagram it, Snapchat it, then tweet the recipe.  Some older millenials will also still Facebook it ;).

In other words, the knowledge needed to do something yourself has never been easier to come by, or easier to share.  The sense of accomplishment of building something is now possible to share with everyone you know, and more, instantaneously.

Train table I built 12 years ago…now covered in decorations…shared only via email 🙁 due to no social media.

The increased availability of materials, and the accessibility of knowledge are two major reasons why DIY is exploding and also why it offers a high return on investment ($$ savings and benefit from time spent).  Another major reason is the tremendous advancement in technology relating to building traders.  Plumbing, carpentry, electrical have all experienced mammoth increases in technology and gadgets available to DIYers that make jobs easier and more fun.   One of my favorite groups of products are the many tools manufactured by Kreg. Visit

These are tools incredible timesavers that cut project times literally in half, eliminate complex steps that required advanced skills, and reduce the need to buy other costly gear.

DIY trends have increased and decreased over time.  However, with today’s tech, tech savvy consumers, and availability of materials, it looks like the DIY wave will rise forever.  USA DIY GUYS are definitely excited about it.  Thanks for reading!
